Friday Friends # 2

Here goes the second installment of a new custom that I've created for this blog: Friday Friends. Each Friday I select an interesting, instructive or otherwise intriguing post from one of the blogs of my followers and I post a link to it.

Our second-ever Friday Friend is from Valerie Geary's blog, Something to Write About. Ms. Geary's post from June 20, 2010, titled 6 Reasons Why I Haven't Read TWILIGHT...Yet, is a lovely tribute to bucking trends. Is it dysfunctional to not embrace the current "it" phenomenon? No; I believe that it demonstrates a healthy and courageous independence of thought that's refreshing, stimulating and appealing. Whether or not you agree with Ms. Geary's 6 reasons, you can't help but applaud her courageous honesty.

How about you? Are there any "it" phenomena, current or past, that just didn't do it for you?

  1. That is a great post. I haven't read Twilight, either. There have been lots of "in" things that didn't do it for me. Like when I finally saw the movie Titanic, and thought I really could have done without that.

  4. aspiring_x,

Yes, Valerie certainly has a sense of humor (it's SO apparent if you ever read her blog). As far as getting caught up in the books - hey, that's cool. We're not saying we're for or against any specific piece of work, we're just saying that we're passionately for original thinking.

Looking forward to seeing your next neat piece of blog art,

    Mohamed

  5. Hi Mohamed, Friday friends is a great idea. I have just read the first book from the Twilight Series. Nowadays every one is into writing 7 part series. Stand alone books are hard sell. Have a nice weekend!

  6. Thanks for the feedback, Rachna (and I hope that all is well in Bangalore, India).

7 part series? You mean to tell me that I have to write 6 more books?!? Gosh, I'll be happy if I could just finish this second novel! :)

    Take care,
    Mohamed

  8. Great post and great link. I also have not and will not read any of the Twilight books or see any of the movies. The vapid heroine and the Mormon ideology don't work for me. Neither do sparkly vampires.

BTW, I really like your idea of Friday Friends and am over here following you now. :)

  9. Thanks, Lloyd! I visited your blog; many blessings and respect for your spiritual strength. May your life always be a reflection of the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount.

  10. sarahjayne,

Great to have you here! And thank you for contributing your opinions to our Friday ode to original thinking.

Best wishes on your evolving WIP. I'm following your blog, looking forward to eventually reading excerpts (if and when you're ready to share).

    Happy weekend!

  11. Great idea for Friday posts :)

I have read the entire Twilight series, but I don't write that way (at least I don't think so). I can't write to a trend. I've tried, but I lack the passion. I have to write the stories that are inside me and try to remain true to that.

  12. Thanks, Lynda! I don't think it takes passion to write to a trend. It takes passion to write like you do - staying true to the stories that are inside you. Keep writing and don't ever forget what Jack London said about inspiration.

  13. Oh man, I push against the latest trends, almost all the time. Unless it's something really awesome like having a much better selection of converse at the local store.
I didn't read twilight until one of my sixteen year old guitar students BEGGED me to. That was a year ago.
I certainly couldn't write to a trend. I write because I love to write and I wouldn't love it if I wasn't writing whatever I want.

  14. I'm with you, Jolene! The world's strictures bind us quite enough when we're out and about. There's no reason to give ourselves internal strictures once we regress into our minds for creation.

Hope your Alaskan hike went well; I can only WISH we had those cooler temps down here in the lower 48 :)

  15. I resisted Twilight for a loooong time before caving and reading the series. #1 is OK, the rest suck.

Tanning beds, cheerleading, that sort of stuff I've always avoided, along with braces, manicures, other trends (fashion wise & other).

    Great post, thought provoking.

  16. Thank you, Terresa! I have to admit: I haven't read any of the books; I haven't seen the movies. But I can certainly see how someone like you, someone on a steady literary diet of Camus and Plath, might not feel fully engaged by tanning beds, cheerleading, braces, and manicures.

    Enjoy the day!
